Colossus
of Rhodes in Bronze
None
of the Seven Wonders have suffered so piteously as the Colossus
of Rhodes; there is more than a likelihood that the Hanging
Gardens of Babylon have been identified, but the exact site
of the Colossus is lost to memory. From ancient writers, however,
we know that it stood somewhere at the entrance to the harbour;
that it was 100 feet high, or a little over; that it was made
of bronze in sections, strengthened with masonry within; and
that the popular idea of it, standing with legs astride, is
false.
