Goddess
and Sacred Owl - Tell Halaf, Syria
This
stone eagle, weird and huge, kept watch before the front of
the temple-palace; reminiscent of the phoenix, it probably represents
the sun god. On the right is the famale member (believed to
be the goddess Hepet) of the divine triad that stood like caryatids
in the building's portico.
