AZILIAN PEBBLES

of Azilian pebbles. These painted pebbles from the prehistoric
Magdalenian age have been thought to be a form of writing or
perhaps the ancestor of writing. Recent investigations, however,
imply that a form of astronomical notation, itself a form of
writing, existed in Crô-Magnon times, as early as 30,000
