This steep sided ravine running parallel to the rift faulting of the Bekka valley and the mountains, provided the original outlet for the Great Watercourse. This was planned to divert and discharge surplus flood and spring snow melt water away from and some 30 feet above the level of the Rachaiya Basin, to prevent the rich agricultural land from flooding.
